It is not unusual for men to knit in Peru. Pre- Columbian Indian men made netting with a loop stitch that resembles knitting and the process is sometimes referred to as needle-knitting because of the needles they used. Gabino and his wife do all
the knitting while his daughters help with the sewing and blocking. The native Alpaca has made this area of Peru famous for their hand knit sweaters.

Alpaca fibers are actually hairs but are spun in the same way wool is spun. These sweaters have durability and strength as
well as Alpaca's softness. Alpaca comes in over 20 natural shades. Some natural dies are still in use. The most common are the leaves of the walnut trees. The Denogal tree yields brown, yellow and gold. Cochineal, which is purchased in powder form in the market, yields shades of red. And common soot, carbon de casa, which is collected from the rafters of houses, yields black and brown.

In recent years knitters have become accustomed to the larger sizes that most Americans and Europeans want. You will find that there is ample room in the arm and body width as well as length.
